During the last year the cell phone market has seen an impressive number of Android smartphones being released. Some have impressive screen-sizes, 3G and 4G technologies, while others simply try to cram the latest and greatest mobile technology into devices that are often billed as iPhone killers. Two of these Droid phones include the Google Nexus One and The Droid X.
Best Screen on an Android? - Motorola Droid X
While the Motorola Droid X is not the only smartphone with a 4.3-inch screen it certainly is impressive. Users of this device are sure to be inspired to take a lot of photos and videos, owing to the fact that this smart phone has an 8-megapixel camera with dual LED flash that can also record 720p video.
Fortunately, Motorola included a generous amount of memory to ensure that the Droid X can store lots of media. The phone has 8GB of memory on-board but also ships with a microSD card that is good for 16GB. If this is not good enough for some users, they can purchase up to a 32GB card, which can take the total storage up to an impressive 40GB.
The phone has a modified version of Motoblur, which the phone uses as its interface. There are also four hard buttons (menu, home, back and search) to help users navigate the phone in addition to the touch capabilities of the screen. If users want to view pictures and videos on an even larger screen than the phone’s 4.3-inch, they can use the phone’s micro HDMI port to output to a compatible television or monitor.
- Other features: 3G, Wi-Fi, bluetooth, GPS, HDMI output, micro USB
- Weighs: 5.47 ounces
- Dimensions: 5” x 2.6” x 0.4”
Best Unlocked Android Cell Phone – The Google Nexus One
The Google Nexus One Android phone takes first place as the best unlocked Android cell phone because you are not required to commit to one mobile carrier even if the $179 two-year contract from T-Mobile is signed to. This means that owners of the Nexus One have the choice of using the phone on any GSM network they choose. However, if the phone is not to taken on a contract it will cost the purchaser $529.
This Google smartphone has a fast processor. It also has a gorgeous 3.7-inch AMOLED display, a dual microphone for noise cancellation and improving the audio quality on calls. The second microphone is used to monitor background noise and then makes an adjustment to the audio output to deliver the best sound quality it can.
- Other features: 5 mega-pixel camera, 3.5mm headphone jack and a trackball
- Weight: 4.58 ounces
- Dimensions: 4.56” x 2.36” x 0.47”
Android Alternatives to the iPhone 4 and Blackberries
Whether consumers are shopping for a smartphone with noise canceling capabilities, great audio quality or they want a multimedia powerhouse with a large screen, the Droid X and Google Nexus One are up to the task. In any case, these and other Android alternatives to Blackberry and the mighty iPhone 4 smartphones, should become even more desirable options once Froyo 2.2 is released.
Of course, having a feature-rich phone is only half of what needs to be considered when deciding on a new phone, as choosing the best service agreement is also important. However, with the frequent change in cell phone service plans, it is no wonder that many consumers choose to purchase unlocked phones so they can change service providers at will.
Still, they must be careful of early termination fees that can cost hundreds. Thankfully, the Google Android option is not as strict on the unlocking/jail-breaking issue, but consumers will still need to read the fine print on their contracts before signing an agreement with a cell phone service provider. Those burdens aside, users can get on with finding, installing and using some great Android apps for their phones.
