Going to college on a sport scholarship is a great way for students, who are in need of financial help, to pay for their education. While students generally have more luck finding a full ride athletic, basketball or football scholarship, there are some good options available for students seeking a golf scholarship to pay for college.
Like most sporting scholarships, the chances of getting a golf scholarship will in part depend on how good of a golfer that student is, and the availability of scholarships. Full ride golf scholarships aren’t very common, so students will have to be proactive in seizing opportunities when they are found. Limited funding often force some institutions to share the scholarship fund among several students, if they don’t have a very strong golf program, but they may make exceptions where they find a really good golfer. In addition to searching for scholarships at several schools, students can find scholarships that are earmarked for special groups such as women, minorities. Here are some:
LPGA Scholarships for Girls
Qualifying young ladies who enjoy the game of golf can apply for one of the three scholarships that are currently being administered by The Ladies Professional Golf Association. The three scholarships are: The Dinah Shore Scholarship, The Marilynn Smith Scholarship and The Phyllis G. Meekins Scholarship for female golfers from a minority background.
All three scholarships are awarded to high school seniors who will be pursuing college degrees upon graduating high school. One $5,000 Dinah Shore Scholarship is awarded each year. The Marilynn Smith scholarships are awarded to 5 successful candidates for a total of $5,000 each, while The Phyllis G. Meeks program awards $1,250 to one successful candidate each year.
